🔥 Episode Theme

This week’s episode of Funky Friday will be a shred-tastic tribute to the Guitar Gods of Funk—those legendary six-string wizards whose riffs, rhythms, and razor-sharp tone helped define the genre. Funk may be built on the groove, but these guitarists brought the fire.

We plan to pack the full 60-minute KDOG show with songs that bite, bend, and burn, highlighting icons and unsung heroes who made the guitar a weapon of mass funkiness.

🎧 Featured Guitar Legends

Here are the axe-slingers who will bring the thunder in Episode 17:

  • Jimi Hendrix – A sonic innovator whose fusion of funk, rock, and psychedelia created timeless tracks like “Power of Soul.”

  • Leo Nocentelli (The Meters) – The understated groove king, known for tight, clean funk lines.

  • Rob Mathes – Studio master who sneaks funk into everything he touches.

  • Eddie Hazel (Parliament-Funkadelic) – Unleashed the emotional force of funk guitar on “Maggot Brain.”

  • Johnny “Guitar” Watson – The swagger, the showmanship, and the licks.

  • Ernie Isley (The Isley Brothers) – Mixed Hendrix influence with family soul.

  • Michael Hampton – “Kid Funkadelic” tore it up for P-Funk with precision and fire.

  • Prince – The purple one himself, always funky, always fierce.

  • Nile Rodgers (Chic) – The king of the chucking rhythm guitar style that fueled a thousand hits.

  • George Johnson (The Brothers Johnson) – Laid-back funk excellence.

🎙️ Why We Chose This Theme

The guitar often plays second fiddle in funk behind bass and drums—but not this time. This episode is a chance to flip the spotlight and show that funk guitar isn’t just rhythm—it’s rebellion, soul, and lightning in a bottle.

Each of these players carved out a unique voice, and their influence spans generations. Whether it’s the raw distortion of Hendrix or Nile Rodgers' pristine syncopation, they all show what’s possible with six strings and a whole lotta funk.
