Before Prince became a global superstar, Minneapolis and St. Paul were already building something extraordinary.

For Episode 88, Twin Cities Funk, Funky Friday follows the signal into the Black music community that gave rise to the Minneapolis Sound.

From early funk pioneers Prophets of Peace and 94 East to the teenage bands that brought together Prince, André Cymone, Morris Day, Jimmy Jam, and Terry Lewis, this week's journey explores the friendships, rivalries, and musical influences behind a revolutionary sound.

We'll trace the rhythmic connection between Tower of Power and The Time, hear Morris Day recall his early musical experiences in this week's Signal Discovery, and follow the groove through Jesse Johnson, Cherrelle, and André Cymone's 2026 release, The Resurrection of Funk.
